In Mozambique I enjoyed everything but the police

When I have talked to people who have been several months circling with his backpack around the worldI have always been very attracted to those who tell me that everything went great and had no mishap. They met exceptional people, saw beautiful places and even fell in love. This is when several turkeys come out with violins and play a deep melody and everyone claps.

I was speechless and wondered if they really left somewhere or, in fact, did the same thing as that clown who told all his people that he was going to travel Asia and dedicated himself to lock himself up at home and post photomontages of she with the most emblematic Asian places in the background. He did it to prove that people can be deceived. You have to be gil ...

During my trips of more than six months (two rounds around the world and one throughout South America) and my long journeys through Africa (one month in Ethiopia and two months in southern Africa) happened to me. I have been very lucky and, finally, I managed to get out of unscathed situations and now I remember them with a smile, but at the time they happened I cursed without quarter. Here are some pearls that happened to me in my travels and that can happen to you (or not):

Rafting accident in Ecuador

Rough rivers

Our horny Irish guide has already warned us: "The river is strong today and we will be the only boat to lower it." That, far from discouraging us, gave us wings to undertake a rafting day that promised to be a great adventure. Wow, it was.

In Tena there are wild rivers, such as the Jondachi and Hollin, that went into the deepest jungle. Rafting for them is a pass. That day the water flow was impressive and the rapids reached grade IV + (V being the conventional maximum of difficulty). We prepare for a day of several hours descending the river, in which we would have a stop to eat.

Just after that stop, and with people burned by the experience, but wanting to give everything in the last section, we face a rather violent rapid. We managed to overcome it, but, just when we celebrated our victory, a treacherous wave of more than a meter hit a great rock and it came over us from the stern. We jumped forward to counterbalance but it was too late. We tipped over and chaos came.

Two girls were about to continue down the river completely out of control. The situation was very dangerous because what we did not know was that, just after the rapid we had overcome, the hardest of the day arrived. It was the Irishman, with his safety kayak, who took them out of trouble. After leaving them on the shore he continued downstream to chase the boat, which left with all our cameras and belongings.

We were alone with the Ecuadorian guide in the middle of the jungle. It took us three hours to get out of there. Torrential rain, giant spiders, red ants that left us bites all over our bodies, wrong roads in a jungle without a path ... It was an adventure that ended almost at dusk when we found a village by chance. They had a cell phone for the community and we were able to contact the Irish. Rafting Trekking through the jungle and final beer. All in one.
