A TAP plane landed at dawn in one of the shortest runways in the world. We were on board and the dark night prevented us from observing the rapid maneuver the pilot made to stop dry on Madeira airport.
It was after 12 pm and, from what I had seemed to see on the internet, the car rental offices at the airport were already closed at that time. So we decided to ask for a pick-up service at the hotel that we had booked so as not to get too complicated on our first night in Madeira.
When picking up the suitcases we observe that both Herz, Sixt and the other car companies were still open. We had already made the payment of 45 euros to come to pick us up so we looked for the driver who would take us to our first destination on the island of Madeira.
We had booked an apartment for five days in advance in the area near Cabo Girao and arrived from the airport by taxi to the destination in just 30 minutes.
Anyone who has visited Madeira over 12 years ago will notice a big difference With the current state of the island. Thanks to funds from the European Union, large infrastructures and new roads have been made that facilitate communication across the island.
About the size of Menorca, Madeira is a large newly created volcano with vertical walls falling towards the ocean. Years ago, driving around Madeira was dangerous, expensive and it took a long time to cross the island. Today, thanks to the multiple tunnels and highways, distances have been cut and you can visit and cross the island in a single day.
Dawn in Cabo Girao
Through search engines we found some apartments in a tourist complex called Cape Girao. With a good score on Booking and only 50 euros a night we found it a wise option. If you want to avoid searches and book accommodation on the same site as me in Madeira you can do it in the following link without any price increase:
This accommodation is probably not the ideal place for people with vertigo although the island itself should already be a handicap for all those who suffer from heights. The apartments are located at the top of the cliffs of Cabo Girao that rush to the ocean from 589 meters high. The views from the same apartment are impressive and upon arrival we found a bottle of champagne that welcomed us in the room and a great night full of stars.
