When preparing a long-term trip one of the most important and indispensable accessories is neither more nor less than backpack.

To give the around the world for 1 year I bought a 100 liter backpack. I filled her up and down with clothes and travel guides and she incorporated a folding tent that was very easy to transport; the result? It weighed a lot and in some moments more than in a faithful and dear companion it became a torture.

If I were to start a trip of such duration again tomorrow, I would not take such a large backpack. The inexperience regarding such long journeys led me to make some mistakes that I would surely not repeat again and I hope that my experience will help you.

Next I will detail some aspects that I consider you should consider if you have to buy a long travel backpack:

MEDIUM SIZE

Traveling for a long time does not mean that you should put your home's closet in your backpack. Remember that in the countries you will visit you will find everything you need: clothes, shoes, guides, utensils, etc. It is also very likely that you visit very cheap countries to travel in which you will find everything and at very cheap prices.

You can exchange the books with other travelers that you will know in the hostel where you stay or in the cafeteria, the square, or the park that you will frequent and in which you will like to spend a few hours reading. The same with your travel guides; Do you leave Thailand to enter Cambodia? Then change the guide to that traveler you just met who just arrived in Thailand from Cambodia. Think that your personal notes and underlined paragraphs may help you and save you some time.

In my opinion with a 70 liter backpack you have more than enough.

COMFORTABLE

The backpack will accompany you throughout your trip, and most of the time it will be mounted on your back. It is important that you feel good when you load with it. Check the shoulder straps, try that these are wide so that the weight is well distributed and padded so that they are comfortable and do not cause chafing. Make sure the back is padded and adapts to your spine. It would not be bad if the part that will be hooked on the back had a good ventilation system to avoid sweating. He belt It is basic and I recommend that it is also padded. I recommend that you try more than one and two backpacks so that you can find the one that best fits your back and makes you feel more comfortable.

RESISTANT

The backpack (luckily) will not always be attached to your body, but sometimes it will travel in the luggage rack of an airplane or the trunk of a vehicle, and for many times it will travel on the roof of a coach, on the deck of some ship, at the back of a bike-taxi or on the back of a donkey. Your backpack should face climatic and temperature changes constantly. You will throw it on the floor to sit on it, throw it at the top of the train, step on it and drag it from side to side. It is important that the materials that make up the backpack are resistant.

Check the seams because these are the weakest part of the backpack and through it water, insects, or go to know what. In addition, the seams are the part whereby the backpacks tend to break more easily, so the best thing is a backpack with double or triple stitching and that the thread with which they are sewn has a high resistance.

Finally remember that the brand and design are not the most important, so forget about hobbies and do not buy a backpack because it is beautiful or because you like it to be that color. Choose a backpack that is comfortable, strong, lightweight and that suits your back well. Make your backpack the most faithful of your companions during this unforgettable trip that you are about to start.
