Brotherhoods of Holy Week in Cartagena

The protagonists of the Holy Week in Cartagena are four brotherhoods:

Illustrious Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Socorro

Founded at the end of the 17th century, this brotherhood is at the head of the Via Crucis that takes place at dawn on Dolores Friday.

Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene

It is best known for its nickname: Brotherhood Marraja. They carry large thrones full of flowers and whose figures have garments with striking gold embroidery. The drums are solemn and powerful, promoting an order and compass respected by the many penitents who follow them.

If you don't have this short name, you better call them "Los Californios". The Californios organize five processions during the Holy Week in Cartagena (each one is very different from the others): Palm Sunday, Procession of Silence, that of Holy Tuesday, Friday of Dolores and Holy Wednesday.

This brotherhood organizes the morning procession of Easter Sunday. Especially emotional is the moment when the procession is collected in the church of Santa María de Gracia, when thousands of Cartagena sing the notes of the Salve Cartagenera to the Virgin of Beautiful Love.

  • 03:30 Procession Via Crucis del Santísimo and Real Cristo del Socorro (Brotherhood of Cristo del Socorro).The itinerary varies: Sepulcher, Concepción, Plaza de San Ginés, San Francisco, Campos, San Miguel, Aire (1st Penitential Station in the Church of Santa María de Gracia, for the offering in honor of the former Patroness of Cartagena, the Blessed Virgin del Rosell), Honda, Plaza de San Francisco (north side), Arco de la Caridad, San Vicente, Plaza del Sevillano, Serreta (2nd Penitential Station in the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, before the Patroness of Cartagena, to attend to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, at six in the morning). This day, between 6 pm and 10 pm there are transfers of the Christs and Virgins of the different brotherhoods.

Sunday April 14, Palm Sunday

  • 17:00 Procession of Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem or Burrica (California Brotherhood):The protagonists are the children. Cartagena is flooded with children dressed in Hebrew costumes combining the colors of the groups to which they belong carrying palms and olive sticks. Monday, April 15, Holy Monday

  • 21:00 Procession of the Promises of the Blessed Virgin of Piety (Brotherhood Marraja): Air, Canyon, Mayor, Plaza San Sebastián, Gates of Murcia, Santa Florentina, Park, Plaza de López Pinto, Serreta, Charity, Plaza del Risueño, Duke, Plaza de San Ginés, San Francisco, Campos, San Miguel, Aire, Iglesia from Santa Maria.

Tuesday April 16, Holy Tuesday

This day, the brotherhood of the Californios organizes the so-called Procession of Transfers, the most military of all.

Formed by the three Apostles, San Pedro, San Juan and Santiago. Each one leaves a different facility, accompanied by soldiers from the garrison and having previously performed various military honors at sunset.

The three saints are carried on their shoulders, in Cartagenero style thrones, to the Plaza de San Sebastián where they join to continue in a single procession to the Church of Santa María de Gracia.

It is one of the most beautiful acts of the Holy Week in Cartagena 2019.

Wednesday, April 17, Holy Wednesday

  • 5:45 p.m. DRAMA PRETORIO. LAVATORIO DE PILATOS (California Brotherhood):a theatricalization of the trial and condemnation of Jesus takes place in the Town Hall square.

Thursday, April 18, Holy Thursday

  • 19:15 DESAGRAVIO OF THE ROMAN SOLDIERS BEFORE THE CHRIST OF ECCE HOMO (Brotherhood California) The Californian Roman Soldiers honor the image of Christ at the door of the Church of Santa María de Gracia.
  • 21:00 Procession of Silence and the Blessed Christ of the Miners (California Brotherhood):the most solemn of the processions of the Californios. The lights of the streets of the route are extinguished and the axes, accompanied by a single drum, take center stage.
